On October 21, 2026, the PHP development team released emergency security updates addressing two critical vulnerabilities that could allow attackers to remotely execute code on affected web servers without authentication.

The vulnerabilities, collectively known as PHP2Shell, could have widespread implications for businesses operating websites and eCommerce platforms. According to security researchers at [Wiz](https://www.wiz.io/blog/php2shell-php-rce), PHP powers approximately 70% of websites worldwide, including many built with WordPress and Adobe Commerce (Magento).

> **In response to the security advisory, TMO Group promptly initiated a security review across the client projects under its technical management**, prioritizing the identification of affected environments and the implementation of appropriate security updates.

## Understanding the PHP2Shell Vulnerabilities

The risk involve security flaws in the core PHP programming language that could allow attackers to gain unauthorized access to servers, expose sensitive information, or disrupt website operations.

Both vulnerabilities concern how PHP manages memory and internal request data and **received a critical severity score of 9.2 out of 10** under the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) 4.0:

- **CVE-2026-109618:** A vulnerability involving out-of-memory handling that can cause PHP to process corrupted internal data.
- **CVE-2026-109619:** A vulnerability involving previously freed internal state that may be reused during subsequent requests.

Importantly, **the vulnerabilities exist within PHP itself, rather than in a particular website application or plugin.** This means that even websites running updated versions of WordPress, Magento, or other PHP-based platforms may remain exposed if their underlying PHP runtime is vulnerable.

In some server configurations, attackers could exploit the vulnerability before the website's application code even begins executing. This makes it particularly important for businesses to review their underlying hosting infrastructure and PHP versions, rather than relying exclusively on application-level security updates.

The PHP security team issued an initial warning on October 20, followed by the release of [official security patches](https://www.php.net/archive/2026.php#2026-10-21-5) on October 21, urging website owners and hosting providers to update immediately.

## TMO's Immediate Security Response

Following the announcement, our technical teams moved to assess potential exposure across the client projects we support, including the underlying server environments and PHP dependencies of eCommerce platforms.

Our response prioritizes three areas:

- **Security assessment:** Identifying potentially affected PHP installations, reviewing runtime versions, and determining where corrective action is required.
- **Patch deployment:** Coordinating security updates and applicable vendor-provided fixes, while accounting for platform compatibility and hosting requirements.
- **Verification and monitoring:** Checking critical website functionality following updates and monitoring for unusual errors or server activity.

For eCommerce websites, these checks are particularly important because infrastructure updates must be implemented without unnecessarily disrupting transactions, payment processing, customer accounts, or integrations with business systems.

The review also considers headless implementations where PHP-based systems, such as Magento, operate behind a separate JavaScript storefront.

## What Should Website Owners Do Now?

Businesses using PHP-based websites or eCommerce platforms should coordinate with their development teams, hosting providers, or technical maintenance partners to assess their exposure and apply the necessary security updates.

The following actions are recommended:

1. **Identify affected systems.** Check which websites, applications, servers, and containers use PHP, including backend services that may not be visible from the storefront.
2. **Apply the official security patches.** The PHP development team has released patched versions **8.2.35, 8.3.36, 8.4.27, and 8.5.12**. Websites running earlier releases in these branches should upgrade immediately to the corresponding fixed version or a later supported release.
3. **Verify the deployment.** Confirm that the patched PHP runtime is active, review application compatibility, and test essential business functions such as checkout, payments, customer accounts, and third-party integrations.
4. **Monitor for potential compromise.** Review server and application logs for suspicious activity. Where immediate patching is impossible, consider restricting public exposure until remediation can be completed.

> **Important for websites running older PHP versions:** PHP 8.1 and earlier, including PHP 8.0 and 7.4, have reached end of life and did not receive new standard PHP releases addressing these vulnerabilities. Although the PHP security team has provided limited source-level backports and some Linux distributions or long-term support vendors offer security fixes, these do not restore normal upstream support. Businesses still using these versions should prioritize upgrading to a supported PHP release or confirm that their hosting provider has applied an appropriate, verified vendor patch.

The [PHP Foundation](https://thephp.foundation/blog/2026/10/21/todays-php-security-release-and-how-were-strengthening-php-security/) has urged organizations to update immediately. While temporary mitigation measures may reduce exposure, **applying the appropriate security update remains the only complete remediation** for these vulnerabilities.

## Maintaining Secure and Reliable eCommerce Operations

The PHP2Shell incident highlights the importance of ongoing infrastructure maintenance and timely security updates. For businesses operating complex eCommerce platforms, maintaining a secure environment requires coordination across application development, hosting infrastructure, technical maintenance, and operational monitoring.

At TMO Group, we support international brands through [eCommerce Hosting and CloudOps](/services/ecommerce-hosting/) and [BAU Managed Services](/services/managed-ecommerce/), combining infrastructure management, technical support, security maintenance, and continuous platform improvements.

Our experience with platforms such as Adobe Commerce (Magento) also allows us to address security and infrastructure requirements within the wider context of eCommerce operations, integrations, and business continuity.

> **If you are concerned about your website's exposure to the latest PHP vulnerabilities, or need support managing security updates across your eCommerce infrastructure,** [**contact TMO Group**](https://www.tmogroup.asia/contact/)**.** Our team can help assess your environment, identify maintenance priorities, and plan the appropriate next steps.
