User Experience Design for Seniors

It takes longer for senior users to read text, and identify colors or modules. Our "senior-friendly" design for eCommerce helps you better reach elderly consumers.

A recent survey by UI/UX consulting firm Nielson Norman Group shows the ability of users aged 25-60 to properly utilize web pages/apps drops by 0.8% yearly. Middle-aged and senior users were also found to be 74% less efficient at performing the same tasks as their younger counterparts, taking them longer to identify important areas of a page/app, distinguish each discrete part, and extract information.

User Experience Design for Seniors
Enhanced Color Contrast
High-contrast design can make a dramatic difference in making user interfaces more easily readable and accessible to those with a loss of color perception.
Using Words and Fonts to Your Advantage
While typical font sizes on websites and mobile apps are 11-12 pixels, it is recommended to increase it by at least 50% (16px) for seniors. Additionally, including more detailed descriptions will establish a sense of trust and guide users through text.
Minimized Gestural Interactions and Simplified Product Design
Seniors often lose the speed and dexterity required to interact with modern interfaces. We recommend keeping things simple and comfortable by making interfaces “click only” and with a button size of at least 44x44px, as well as streamlining relevant information into a single page since scrolling and split-screen operations complicate navigation and frustrate many senior users.
The Value of a Human Touch
A strong design empowers users of all experience levels and brings confidence and reassurance to a process that may otherwise feel daunting. We believe the industry needs to combat older users questioning or doubting their abilities—clear and accessible can be more effective than beautiful.
Front-end development and validation optimization
Our designers and front-end engineers collaborate to present high-resolution interfaces that follow the principles of senior-friendly design. After the design goes live, we listen to feedback, check if user needs and business requirements are met, and continuously optimize the design.
